Shamans were initiated during the Winter Spirit Dance. They became shamans by going on the same spirit quest as their contemporaries, but not all spirits were equal, and the shamans were chosen by the more powerful, such as the Sweat Lodge Spirit. Shamans presided over the tribe’s spiritual life, and were used for curing, cursing, exorcising evil spirits and retrieving lost souls. In certain ceremonies the villagers sang and asked the spirits questions, and the spirits screamed their responses through the shaman.
